In the 1930s, Frank Reaugh created Twenty-Four Hours with the Herd, a series of seven panoramic pastel paintings that portray a day in the life on the plains during the height of the Texas cattle roundups. Reaugh based his series in part on studies he created while accompanying trail drivers in the 1880s. Reaugh’s masterwork is commemorated with a set of notecards.

“I like to be where the skies are unstained by dust and smoke, where the trees are untrimmed and where the wild flowers grow. I like the brilliant sunlight, and the far distance. I like the opalescent color of the plains.” —Frank Reaugh
